Take advantage of cloud storage — but don’t neglect physical backups

Cloud storage can be an invaluable way to access your important documents and data remotely and keep it safe in case your local storage fails. However, cloud storage is typically kept behind a password, meaning an unauthorized user can potentially access it if they have your credentials. In addition, cloud storage isn’t 100% safe from […]

Achieve redundancy so you never lose data

Redundancy comes in many forms: Battery backup, redundant internet connections and data backup, to name a few. Use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) so you’re protected in case of a brownout, consider redundant internet connections if your area is vulnerable to outages and back up your data frequently. Doing all of this can help prevent […]

Back up your data

Data is notorious for suddenly disappearing without warning. Maybe your power goes out while a file is writing, or something gets corrupted. Maybe you’re a victim of malware and need to completely wipe a storage drive. Practically everyone has important data they absolutely cannot lose, and the only way to be sure it’s safe is […]

Why you need cloud backup in addition to an external hard drive

During the 1990s, most PCs were notorious for making lots of noise whenever performing a CPU-intensive task like updating a spreadsheet, loading a video game or opening a busy webpage. Some of these sounds were related to the reading of media formats that have since become less important, such as floppy disks and CD-ROMs. Today’s […]

Make multiple copies of your important data

You certainly don’t want a system crash to destroy your most important documents and photos. Maintain redundant backups of your data across many different media types. Consider cloud-based backup as well as external HDDs or thumb drives or even newer solid state drives (SSD). The 3-2-1 rule is a good general framework for backing up your data: […]

Hard disk drives don’t last forever

If you use an external HDD for backup, be mindful of it’s lifespan, it won’t last forever. HDD failure rates rise abruptly in the fourth year and beyond, so if you’re wary of losing a key backup, make sure to have other drives in the mix and/or use a cloud-based backup solution.
